I’ve been doing Crossfit for a little over 2 years and this is my 3rd Open. The first two I really had no idea what I was doing. I had no idea what to eat or how to warm up. After working with Karla on my diet for the last year, I’ve gone into this with excitement just knowing that my health is so much better. I have been so slow to lift heavy and big PRs are pretty rare for me. I did the scaled version and thought I paced myself pretty well. I had 3 minutes to do the clean. After catching my breath, I did my first lift and the coaches said that looked easy and they threw some extra weight on for me. I said “how bout the 2s?” and they smiled and said “how about 10s”. There was no time to think. I failed the first lift and then with 1 second to spare, I got a 15lb PR! I would never have done that without the coaches loading the bar and cheering me on and I’ve been smiling about it all weekend.

Why I do the crossfit open..... I have done it now for 4 years and each year I have proven to myself I CAN do it! Most days I "think" I can't do certain things and the open proves to everyone that you can if you just push as hard as you can! I always get so nervous because I just want to do my best! I have been coming back from a chronic back injury for awhile now and I am so thankful for the work Karla has done for me to get me back to feeling so much better!
All I wanted in 18.2 to was to pick up that barbell, NO matter what! I didn't stop moving and I got to do 4 cleans and last one was a PR! It brings tears to my eyes when we have so many people cheering us now, it pushes me so much harder! We all want the same thing, to do our best! And I love seeing everyone else conquer their fears and achieve amazing things!

When I initially heard what the workout was I was terrified. Burpees have never been my strong suit and I dread them in any workout. My goal for 18.2 was to just finish under the twelve minute time cap. I surprised myself and finished it with the twelve minutes, and also got to do four cleans. All I remember from the workout was I kept telling myself that I had to keep going and to not slow down or take a break. The only thing I remember feeling about the cleans was that I was a little dizzy and I just tried to focus on trying to stand up the clean. When I stood up my pr’d clean it was the best feeling in the world.

My mindset going into this workout was just to keep moving and don't look at the clock. Burpees are always a huge mental struggle for me, so just getting in the zone and trying to keep a steady pace without stopping was my goal! Frankly, I was expecting to finish around 9-10 minutes, and was completely JACKED that I blew my own expectation for myself out of the water. It was one of the biggest rushes I have had quite awhile. Definitely one of my proudest moments to date!

Being new to The Open and FNL, I didn't know what to expect. For 18.2, I was just hoping to finish in time to do the clean. I set up the bar with a weight I was pretty confident I could get if I only had once chance at it. The great thing about the competition atmosphere is that you don't really have time to think, you just have to pick up the bar! I had plenty of time for the clean, so I did my first clean, and my helpers just kept adding weight. Before I knew it I had a 15# PR, but I had no idea until after the time was out. It was a crazy fun atmosphere with all the cheering - and the cowbell!

I was very surprised at the weight I was able to do! Last time I did a 1RM for a clean at 90lbs and I got 115 as a power clean! I kept in mind the skills I have learned from you, Joel, and Terri over the past year! Everything clicked! 18.2 was so challenging but the intensity of the atmosphere was just insane and awesome! I took Marc’s advice and kept moving through the burpees without pausing to take a breath... and it helped! 18.1 and 18.2 has been so different than 17.1-.5 because of my mindset. Instead of “I’m going to do scaled because I’m not good enough to even try Rx...” has changed! I feel I have made huge strides since last year because of the patience of the coaches and my dedication and changed mindset. Thank you for creating everything you have at EHP and having us all surrounded by great people! Looking forward to the next workouts and rest of 2018!
